Arkansas Uses of the Nesbitt Embossed Envelopes

Stamped envelopes were first issued by the United States on July 1, 1853. George F. Nesbitt & Company produced the first issue. Values in the issue included 3 cents, 6 cents, and 10 cents, with varieties of indicia color and paper color producing 18 distinct Scott Catalog numbered envelopes, and many varieties within each of these designations. The envelopes were very poplular and successful in Arkansas, judging by the fact that many more embossed envelopes have survived in collections to this day than Arkansas covers containing an adhesive. The following tabel contains the covers I have records of. There are not doubt many more that I have not seen; this is one of the most numerous categories of Arkansas Postal History cover.

Initially, Nesbitt treated the Embossed envelope issue as they treated other stationary orders, and added their company seal to the reverse of each envelope. After about 100,000 such envelopes had been produced, the US Government ordered the practice stopped, since it was essentially subsidized advertising for the firm. Only a small number of such envelopes have been seen from Arkansas, and i list those I have seen seperate from the non-seal bearing envelopes
